Window Box Arrangement Ideas

Window boxes are convenient ways to have a variety of plant displays that allow you to add some color to the outside of your home and show a bit of your personality. If you live in an apartment and do not have a yard, then a window box allows you to have a green thumb in the middle of the city. There are many window box arrangement ideas you can use to make your display unique.
  1. Color Scheme

    • A window box can be an extension of the color scheme of your house, but through the use of flowers and plants. Take a picture of the outside of your home and take it to the local nursery. Discuss your plan with the experts there and they will help you find flowers that will bloom in the colors to match your home, and that can survive in a window box in your region.

    Holidays

    • Window boxes are convenient because you have easy access to them from inside your home. That makes them easier to change than the plants in your garden outside. You can use your window box as a display area for plants that you can change as the holidays change. For Christmas you can plant poinsettias, small evergreen trees and decorate with candy canes and Christmas figurines. Other holidays you can decorate for include carnations or roses for Valentine's Day, a clover patch for St. Patrick's Day and miniature pumpkins for Halloween along with Halloween decorations. In some cases, the window box would be more for decorations than plants, but it can be a way to offer something special for each holiday.

    Wildflowers

    • If you have wildflowers that grow near your home that you feel would look good in your window box, use them to add color to your arrangement. It would be a good idea to bring a flower book with you to make sure the plants are not poisonous, and you should also be sure you are not picking flowers from someone's property. Wildflowers are an inexpensive way to create unique arrangements for your window box. Do not limit yourself to just flowers. Try other plants such as ivy, tall grass and any other wild plant that you feel would look good.

    Vines

    • Clinging vines planted in your window box will climb your outside walls and drape down over the side of your window box and reach for the ground. It can be a way for you to add ivy or vines to your home and help your window box to disappear behind the vines. Try hanging some flower pots off of the window box as the vines grow to bring some color to the arrangement.
