How Tall Are Calla Lilies?

Calla lilies grow from large bulbs and can result in desirable flowers that are a frequent feature in weddings and other formal events. The size of the calla lily depends on whether it is a standard or a mini flower, as well as the efficient growing of the plant.
  1. Types of Calla Lilies

    • Calla lilies are from the species Zantedeschia. Standard calla lilies are large and naturally yellow or white. Calla lilies in deeper colors such as purple, orange, pink and green are a hybrid species. They are considered mini calla lilies, although some are rather large.

    Standard Calla Lily Size

    • Standard calla lilies average a height of 26 to 36 inches and have a 4- to 6-inch bloom. Some calla lilies result in an open bloom while others close. Some calla lilies have grown up to 48 inches, but this is very rare. The stem is often sturdy, with up to 2 inches of thickness.

    Growing Standard Calla Lilies

    • To achieve optimum heights, you should follow few guidelines when growing your own calla lilies. Plant the calla lilies in an area that gets a lot of natural sunlight or partial shade and plant at a depth of 3 to 4 inches. Be sure that they are planted in an area away from strong, damaging winds. The growing part should face upward so the flower can bloom correctly. Add mulch and water the plant on a regular basis when the soil starts to dry. Add less water until leaves emerge and then keep the soil continuously moist. Fertilize every other week with 20-20-20 solution and avoid fertilizer with nitrogen that turns the flowers green.

    Mini Calla Lily Size

    • Generally, mini calla lilies grow 12 to 24 inches in height. Some grow shorter or taller, with a range between 8 and 30 inches. The blossom averages 3 inches, but it is proportionate to the size of the stem. The range for a mini calla lily blossom is 1/2 inch to 5 inches.

    Growing Hybrid Calla Lilies

    • Avoid cold and wet soil, which will cause hybrid calla lilies to rot. Plant hybrid flowers in well-drained soil instead. Plant the hybrids in the summer in an area that does not exceed 75 degrees three to four inches deep. Water the lilies when you plant them and don't water them again until you see sprouting flowers and leaves. Add water fertilizer every two weeks. Calcium and micronutrient solutions will help your plant grow healthy. Avoid long-term release and ammonium-based fertilizers as these types of fertilizers result in a lower-quality flower. Remove wilted flowers that may infect the other flowers.
