How to Make Serger Flowers

With the use of a serger sewing machine, the raw edge of your fabric becomes stitched with a V-shaped stitch. When you choose a monofilament thread, similar to fishing line, you create an edge that appears as cording along the edge of your fabric. Rolling the edge and using a small stitch will provide you with a firm edge that, when gathered along the raw edge, will give you a beautiful flower. These flowers, added to hats, jackets or dresses, make a perfect embellishment.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the fabric three inches wide and 12 inches long. Sew a rolled hem using a small stitch on your serger machine along one of the long sides of the fabric.

    • 2

Measure out 3-inch increments with your ruler. Mark these increments on the edge opposite the serged hem to indicate the edge of each flower petal.

    • 3

Thread your needle, fold the fishing line in half and tie a knot. Using a weaving motion, gather the material, starting on one corner of the side that has the serge hem.

    • 4

Continue weaving the thread around the corner, all the way to the marking. Turn the material at the marking and continue weaving until you reach the serge hem. When you reach the edge, bring the thread over the top. Continue working in this manner, pulling the thread tightly and gathering the material, until you have created each petal.

Stitch the first petal to the last petal, creating a knot on the back side of the flower.
