Flowers for a Rabbit Repellent

A lot of people agree with Beatrix Potter's portrayal of rabbits as being sweet and cuddly. However, many gardeners have a different view of rabbits. They see first hand the damage that rabbits can do to crops. A hungry rabbit will eat almost anything, and your flower and vegetable garden is a prime target. You can put up fencing or you can plant specific flowers that will help keep the little nuisance out of your plants.
  1. Ageratum

    • Ageratum are beautiful flowers that rabbits do not like.

Ageratum is an annual flower that works well as a border. It grows in low mounds with clusters of fuzzy lavender flowers. The rabbits dislike the texture of these attractive flowers. Ageratum grow well in full sun or partial shade in well-drained soil. They bloom continuously through summer and into the fall.

    Daylily

    • Daylily does not appeal to rabbits.

Daylilies are perennials that do not appeal to rabbits. They can be tall flowers that look attractive when planted in the back of your garden. However, some varieties grow low and work well in the front of your garden as a solid border. These will help deter the rabbits from eating the flowers in the center of your garden. Daylilies require little care, and can withstand poor soil and dry conditions.

    Mexican Marigolds

    • The scent of the Mexican marigold repels rabbits.

Pot marigolds, or English marigolds, are members of the calendula genus. They are short-stemmed flowers that work well when placed in the front of your garden and for borders. Plant them in a sunny spot so that you can enjoy their bright orange and yellow flowers throughout the summer and fall. The unpleasant scent in their leaves repels rabbits.

    Daffodils and Hyacinths

    • Daffodils and hyacinths help protect your spring flowers from the rabbits.

A favorite spring flower is the daffodil. It is a perennial and is one of the first flowers to greet you after a long winter. Hyacinths are often planted with daffodils. They are a shorter stock loaded with fragrant flowers that range in color from deep purples, pinks and white. These two flowers are not favorites among rabbits. Plant them with your tulips to help deter the rabbits in your spring garden.
