Choose a water-tight basket for your water hyacinths. If the basket you wish to use is not water-tight, line it with multiple plastic bags or a plastic liner. Staple the trash bags or liner around the top of the basket with a staple gun. However; it may be better to choose a basket that is already water-tight to avoid puncturing the plastic by accident and killing your plants.
Fill the container nearly to the top with water. Leave a few inches of room at the top so you do not spill your plants if you need to move the basket. Place your basket in a sunny location, either indoors or outdoors.
Place any submerged water plants in the basket first. These include certain varieties of water lilies, sweet flag and water poppies.
Add your water hyacinth to the surface of the water in the basket. You probably only need one or two, depending on the size of the basket, because they have a tendency to reproduce often. You might need to thin them out every month or so to avoid overcrowding the water hyacinths in your basket.
Replenish fresh water as needed to keep the basket nearly full.
