How to Use Soda Cans in Planter Boxes

Large planter boxes can be heavy and difficult to move. Filling the entire container with soil adds much additional weight. To lighten your planter you can replace some of the heavy soil with aluminum cans. Aluminum cans placed on the planter's floor promote good drainage and provide roots with oxygen access.

Instructions

    • 1

Crush as many clean, empty aluminum cans as needed to fill half of your planter. To crush a can neatly and quickly, place it vertically on a hard surface and step down on it firmly while simultaneously pressing in on the sides with two pencils.

    • 2

Neatly line the planter box floor with crushed cans. Stack more cans over the existing cans until the planter is halfway full.

    • 3

Fill the rest of the planter with soil.
