Yellow Flowers With Long Petals

Planting a flower garden or looking for flowers for indoor display often requires you to consider color. If looking for yellow flowers that have showy blooms and long petals, there are numerous species to choose from. Yellow flowers can range from tropical to indigenous wildflowers. Therefore, it is important to understand the types of flowers and their requirements to make sure you can grow them safely in your own garden.
  1. Lilies

    • A variety of lilies have long yellow petals. The glacier lily, or avalanche lily, has long yellow petals that grow 2 to 3 inches wide. It blooms from May to August and prefers moist meadows and open wooded areas. The calla lily, or Queen Victoria calla lily, has gold and bright yellow tones. The calla lily prefers climates of 50 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit and monthly fertilization for healthy growth.

    Tropical Varieties

    • Tropical flowers prefer warmer climates, though some can grow indoors when temperatures are controlled as long as they stay around 70 degrees Fahrenheit. The Paphiopedilum orchid is a popular tropical flower that has some varieties in yellow. Paphiopedilum orchids come in a variety of yellows that are solid in color or can have red stripes, black dots or white spots throughout the petals. The hibiscus is another tropical variety that showcases bright yellow petals. Since the hibiscus is indigenous to Hawaii, it prefers full sunlight and high humidity.

    Wildflowers

    • The Hall's mule-ear is native to California. This perennial showcases yellow blossoms up to 2 inches in diameter and blooms between June and August. The seeds of the Hall's mule-ear are edible, and Native Americans once used its roots for medicinal purposes. The common madia is a bright yellow, daisylike wildflower that blooms from May to September. Its petals can reach up to 3 inches in diameter, and it has a strong-scented bloom that closes at nightfall.

    Sunflowers

    • There are several species of sunflowers, but all are known for their long yellow petals. The "Holiday" variety is an attractive sunflower that grows unevenly in height, but produces blossoms of up to 4 inches in diameter. The" Ikarus" can grow up to 3 feet tall and shows bright yellow blossoms up to 6 inches in diameter. One of the larger varieties of sunflowers is the Tohokujhae, which has up to 7-inch blooms and grows up to 6 feet tall.
