How to Deadhead a Cockscomb

Deadheading may sound like an activity you would find in the latest horror film, but when it comes to flowers, deadheading is not a violent act. Deadheading refers to the act of removing faded and shriveled flowers from your plants to promote new growth and continued blooming. This bit of trickery fools the plant into thinking it has not produced enough flowers to reproduce, prompting it to channel energy into forming new blooms.

Instructions

    • 1

Follow the stem of the cockscomb flower back to where it connects with the main stem of the plant, or the point where new growth begins.

    • 2

Clip the stem with a pair of garden shears to remove the faded bloom. Not only does this prevent the plant from using its energy to produce seeds, it improves the appearance of your garden as well.

    • 3

Check your cockscomb plants regularly and deadhead any blooms that have begun to fade.
