Leave the leaves on the plants until they turn yellow. Yellowing leaves indicate the plant has produced enough food in preparation for the following bloom season.
Cover the flower bed with a thin coating of 5-10-5 fertilizer once the bulbs are above ground. Apply a second coating of fertilizer one month after the bulbs appear above ground.
Cut the blooms using a sharp knife or pruning shears, and cut no more than two leaves from the bloom. More than two leaves removed from the tulips weakens the bulb.
Water the soil every other day, or as needed. Grab a handful of soil to determine the soil's moisture level.
