How to Regrow Bromeliad Flowers

Bromeliad flowers are a varied, diverse group of plants that are hearty, require little maintenance and thrive in nearly all conditions. Different types of bromeliads require different conditions for growth, however. For instance, air bromeliads do not need to be planted in soil, but must be soaked in water once a week. Many bromeliads die after flowering, so regrowing the plants requires you to harvest the small offshoots and then replant or mount them.

Things You'll Need

  • Small scissors
  • Small stake
  • Bromeliad offshoots
  • Soilless potting mix
  • Fine-grade orchid potting mix
  • Gravel
  • Tray
  • Water-soluble fertilizer

Instructions

    • 1

Harvest the dying bromeliad's offshoots by cutting them from the parent plant midway down the connecting stalk. Remove any dry scales at the base of the plant. You can also grow the bromeliad offshoot in the same pot as the parent plant by cutting the parent plant back to its base.

    • 2

Prepare the soil mixture in a pot, if you are growing a terrestrial bromeliad. Mix one-half soilless potting mix with one-half orchid potting mix. This will provide the acidic soil in which the plants thrive. Place the offshoot into the soil and secure it with a small stake to keep it in place. Water it daily to keep the soil moist. Remove the stake once roots have grown and the plant can stay in place on its own.

    • 3

Fill a tray with gravel and water. Place the tray under the bromeliad plant. This will increase the humidity in the area around the plant, helping it to grow.

    • 4

Mount an air bromeliad offshoot on a piece of wood using non-toxic glue or nylon ties. Be sure that you can easily remove the offshoot for watering. Spray the air bromeliad offshoot daily with water and soak it in water for 10 to 15 minutes weekly.

    • 5

Place the air or terrestrial bromeliad in an area with a lot of indirect sunlight. Though most bromeliads can tolerate a variety of temperatures, try to place it in an area where it will be between 50 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • 6

Fertilize the terrestrial bromeliad using a water-soluble fertilizer at approximately 1/4 of the dose recommended on the package. Only fertilize the offshoots when you first harvest them until they flower.

    • 7

Repeat this process by cutting the offshoots off the new plant you have regrown.
