How to Stake a Trumpet Vine

Trumpet vines require staking for the plant to blossom, climb and grow during the warm months of the year. Trumpet vines come in two different varieties, the trumpet creeper and cross vine. While the cross vine is somewhat smaller in stature, both varieties can grow up to 40 feet in one season. The diameter of a healthy trumpet creeper stem measures several inches wide. Trumpet vines are naturally tailored to climb, so planting a stake in the right place in the garden is essential.

Instructions

    • 1

Till the soil in your garden with a hand shovel to ready the land for seed planting. Add all-purpose soil to the garden bed. Prepare the soil in late March or early April when frost is no longer an issue.

    • 2

Hammer a metal stake or stakes 8 to 12 inches into the garden bed ground.

    • 3

Plant trumpet flower vine seeds 1/4 inch deep in the fresh soil around the base of the stake. Cover the seeds with soil. Slowly water the seeds for thorough saturation. Prepare the soil and plant seeds near your garden chain link fence if you prefer the flower vines to grow and twine in this manner.

    • 4

Remove all weeds as they grow. Water the seeds and plant three times a week. Pour water slowly to allow the water to soak into the roots. Quick, daily watering only saturates the surface of the soil and fails to penetrate to the roots.

    • 5

Add fresh all-purpose soil every 14 to 21 days while the vines begin to emerge and grow. Switch to phosphorous-based soil just prior to the blooming of the flowers to ensure the health of the plant.

    • 6

Lightly tie early vines around the base of the stake to guide the plant to grow and twine around the object. Prune the vine and flowers with pruning shears throughout the season.
