How to Make Pindo Palms Grow Taller

Pindo palms are typically slow growing but can be made to grow tall quicker with optimum care. Pindo palms grow to a height of 15 to 25 feet in ideal conditions in their countries of origin. They are not native to North America but have been introduced from Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay to the southern states of the U.S. where they can be seen growing alongside streets, in private yards and parks. They are also known as the jelly palm because their edible fruit is made into jelly.

  Plant your pindo palm in a sunny or partially sunny location. Pindo palms do not thrive or grow taller in full shade. If your palm is planted in a place where it cannot get any sun, you may have to relocate it, as they have been known to die for lack of sunlight. Pindo palms grow in most types of soil and tolerate some salt, which means they grow close to the beach. They prefer well-drained soil and are unlikely to grow taller if planted in a swamp.

  Feed your pindo palm regularly. Pindo palms require plenty of nutrients to encourage healthy growth. Fertilize four to six times a year with one pound per application of palm specific fertilizer that includes magnesium. Sprinkle round the base of the tree and water it in. Mature trees are known to be drought tolerant but newly planted pindo palms require regular watering.

  Plant your pindo palm in a spot where it will not be exposed to excessive cold. Pindo palms are known as one of the most cold tolerant palms available and can handle temperatures down to five degrees Fahrenheit, but no colder. Plants typically do not grow during times of freezing temperatures and a pindo palm will not grow tall in a temperate climate where it is more often cold than warm.
