What Is a Good Trim Around a Flower Bed?

A flower bed is a personal statement. It is your way of adding color and interesting plants to your landscaping. As with any home-improvement project, a garden requires a finishing touch to be complete. The trim around your flower bed will not only make your garden look professional, but it can also help the colors in your flowers to stand out more.
  1. Earth and Mulch

    • Mulch is a brownish organic material that can serve several purposes in your garden. You lay it along the topsoil to help prevent erosion, supply the soil with nutrients and help keep the soil moist. The brown color of mulch allows the colors of your plants to stand out. If you dig a small trench around your flower bed, then you have an area where the mulch meets the green grass to create a border. The contrast in colors helps create a well-defined border around your flower bed.

    Fencing

    • Some flower bed trim is practical rather than decorative. If you live in an area where wild animals feed on your flowers, then the trim you will need is garden wire fencing. This is good trim to prevent animals from eating your plants and burrowing into your garden to eat the roots of your plants as well. Your fencing material should have openings of one inch or less. You can get decorative mesh fencing that will also do the job. Your fence should be 24 inches above the surface and buried into the ground for at least four inches to discourage burrowing animals.

    Decorative Trim

    • Decorative flower bed trim can be small plastic or wooden picket fences, colorful rocks or small stone walls. Use a decorative trim that matches the rest of your landscaping. If you want to use colorful rocks, then consider softer colors such as light brown or gray to allow the colors in your plants to stand out.

    Other Plants

    • One flower bed border idea is to use plants as a trim around the garden. Small bushes that are trimmed to remain short or tightly grouped flowers of the same kind can create a contrast with the rest of your garden. Avoid using flowers of different colors as your border because that will blend in with the rest of your garden and not act as separation between your flowers and your yard.
