How to Plant Sweet Pea Flowers on a Slope

Sweet peas (Lathyrus odoratus) come in two varieties: vine and bush. When planning landscaping for slopes, vine-type sweet peas may not have crossed your mind, but can actually be an exceptional choice for beauty and fragrance. The trick is giving the vines the necessary climbing structure to cover your slope.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Measure your garden and determine the exact size that you want the sweet peas to cover. You’ll want one sweet pea plant for every 3 square feet of coverage.

    • 2

Construct the climbing trellis 1 inch above the ground. Secure the ends and center space with tent stakes. Tie the trellis to the tent stakes for added stability and support.

    • 3

Plant the sweet pea seeds in your garden at the same time you plant regular peas and water regularly to keep the ground moist for germination.

    • 4

Encourage your sweet peas to cling to the trellis by tying the vines onto it loosely with plastic garden tape.
