How to Divide a Lawn Into a Flower Bed

A common way for a homeowner to build a flower garden is to build a wall of stone around the garden. While this method can be picturesque, it can also be expensive and labor intensive. Dividing a lawn to include a flower garden does not have to be difficult or expensive. The key element of this process is making sure to create a clear border around the garden and maintaining it to prevent the grass from creeping into the bed.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay a length of string on your lawn to mark the outline of the flower garden you wish to build. Whether you choose to build a square garden in the center of your lawn, a random-shaped garden along the side of the lawn or a circular garden, the string will help you gauge the size of the garden before you begin digging.

    • 2

Dig up the rough shape of the garden with a shovel. Depending on how you wish to build the garden, you can remove the dirt from the garden area, screen it and reuse it or remove it and replace it with fresh dirt from a garden center. Do not focus your attention on the outline of the garden, as the shovel is not the right tool for the job.

    • 3

Edge the perimeter of the garden with an edger. Step on it to push it in to the ground much as you would a shovel, but then flick the dirt up and in to the garden. Edgers are vital for creating a smooth line to divide a garden from a lawn. Continue edging around the garden's perimeter until the outline is smooth and complete.
