Tips for Forget-Me-Not Plants

The forget-me-not, Alaska’s state flower, is an attractive and easy-to-grow bloom. Because these flowers aren’t finicky about their sun needs, you can grow them in a variety of spaces. Try these flowers if you are looking for a flowerbed addition that is lush, full and unlike those found in your neighbor’s beds.
  1. Starting

    • Forget-me-nots are an easy flower to start from seed, making them also an affordable flower to grow. To start these flowers, loosen the soil in your garden and pull back approximately one-eighth of an inch of topsoil. Place the seeds approximately 10 inches apart from each other, because these flowers do not do well with overcrowding. If you want to start these flowers before the frost season stops, start them indoors in a flat area of soil or a pot.

    Proper Placement

    • Though forget-me-nots can grow in an assortment of light conditions, they thrive best in lightly shaded areas. You can also plant these flowers in full-sun locations; however, you have to watch them carefully and ensure that they don’t show signs of burning out. If the leaves start to brown or wilt, move them from their sunny location to a more shaded one.

    Growing in Pots

    • Forget-me-not flowers make a great potted plant as well. Place these flowers in a wide-mouthed pot, allowing ample space between each to ensure that their roots have room to stretch in the soil. Also place these flowers in a pot that has holes in the bottom, allowing any water that collects from too much rain or overwatering to run out the bottom so the roots don’t become overly saturated.

    Adequate Moisture

    • Forget-me-nots do not require as much water as some more finicky plants. If these plants rest in a flowerbed, they likely will get enough water naturally from the rain. If a long spell of drought occurs, water them to ensure that they don’t dry out. If these plants are potted and on a covered porch or indoors, watering once every three to four days is sufficient.
