How to Grow Hollyhocks From Roots

Hollyhocks are some of the oldest and grandest propagated flowers in the world. These giants reach up to 12 feet in height and their thick stalks are adorned by heart-shaped leaves and cup-shaped flowers. Because they are easy to grow, they make great backgrounds and borders for other plantings. While the flowers bloom between July and September in most areas, the foliage is interesting enough that it can serve as a specimen planting against a barren wall or fence.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the planting area for your hollyhocks. The area should receive at least partial sunlight; the more sun, the larger the plants will grow. The area should also be protected from excessive pooling water, since hollyhocks need well drained, but moist soil.

    • 2

Dig a hole twice as wide and twice as deep as the hollyhock root that you will be planting.

    • 3

Line the base of the hole with pea gravel, and sphagnum or peat moss. Hollyhocks like to live in moist surroundings, but this can lead to them being over-watered. The pea gravel will allow excess water to drain, while the moss will hold water to keep the roots from drying.

    • 4

Cover the roots so that the crown is at least 1/4-inch below the surface.

    • 5

Thoroughly wet the area and keep it moist until the first leaf breaks through the soil.
