How to Build Steps in a Garden With Wooden Rounds From Logs

Garden steps provide a way for you to access and enjoy your garden without the risk of stepping on your flowers even if your garden sits on a hill. Using the rounds cut from a tree trunk requires the least amount of prep work compared to all other typical garden step materials. Tree trunk rounds also lend to a more organic look in your garden, which is pleasing to the eye. The use of tree trunk rounds is also an economically smart decision, as you can often get them free or very cheap from farmers cutting their own firewood.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay out your tree trunk rounds in your yard or on a sidewalk. Laying out the rounds allows you to determine which one fit best between your plants and flowers as you lay your steps.

    • 2

Determine how you want your steps to go through the garden. You may want to lay steps so that you can reach each part of your garden from a different step, or you may want to create a walkway from one side of the garden to the other.

    • 3

Place your first step at the garden’s edge. Tree trunk rounds do not require any prep work to your garden or the rounds.

    • 4

Place the second round so that it slightly overlaps the first step. Pack the dirt underneath the second step until it is stable and secure before continuing to the next step.

    • 5

Repeat the process until you have completed your steps.
