What Should I Wear to a Garden Luncheon?

If you completely get it wrong and turn up at a social event in the wrong attire, you will probably feel embarrassed, or at least out of place. So before deciding what you should wear to a garden luncheon, think about how formal it may be, the sort of dress that your hosts normally prefer and, perhaps, the weather.
  1. Very Formal Wear

    • Maybe the most formal garden luncheon that you could be invited to is one hosted by the Queen of England at Buckingham Palace. Even if this might be quite unlikely, it can be a useful yardstick for formal occasions. The official website of the British Monarchy explains that gentlemen will usually wear morning dress or lounge suits and women are normally attired in afternoon dress, with hats or fascinators. A fascinator is a hair accessory that is worn on one side of the head and is made of items such as flowers, feathers and fabric.

    Men

    • While it is often suitable to be casually dressed, don't turn up for a garden luncheon in sneakers, jeans and a T-shirt. Still, if it is hot, a nice pair of shorts can be substituted for trousers. Light-colored shirts are suitable for summer, as they highlight a suntan. Polos are effective too, as well as short sleeves, or rolled-up sleeves if you are wearing a long-sleeved shirt. If you do decide to wear trousers, chinos look right in a garden, as do white trousers. But be careful when you are eating – stained trousers are not cool.

    Women

    • Day dresses are the most common if your luncheon is being held in the afternoon and early evening. Light colors, fabrics and patterns are the best if the day is hot as these not only give comfort but also reduce sweating. Flowers are an especially fitting pattern for garden settings. If it is an evening event, cocktail dresses are particularly appropriate, with low fronts or backs. At a more formal event, a light gown will look proper with some light accessories, such as pearl jewelry.

    Kids

    • If you are taking your kids to a garden luncheon, they will probably be running around with other children. So, don’t overdress them and choose clothes that are loose and comfortable. Still, make sure they look clean and smart. So, go with light dresses for girls and shorts with a polo shirt for boys.
