How to Care for Pageant Primroses

The pageant primrose is a variety of English primrose, also called Primula vulgaris or P. acaulis. It was bred in Japan by the Sakata Seed Corporation. Pageant has vividly bright colors that stand out in a shady woodland garden or a rock garden. They can also be grown along pathways or in beds. Pageant does well in pots, and blooms in the early spring, with the flowers lasting two to four weeks. After the blooms fade, transplant your primroses into the garden and they will continue to bloom year after year.

Instructions

    • 1

Plant pageant primroses in indirect light, in bright shade, but not in full sunlight. They can take sunlight in the cooler parts of the day but should be shaded during the hottest part of the day. Indoors, put your pots of primroses in indirect sunlight near a cool window.

Plant pageant primroses in cool areas. Primroses prefer temperatures in the range of 55 degrees to 65 degrees Fahrenheit. They don't do well in hot climates. Inside the house, keep your potted primroses in a cool area, near a window.

    • 3

Water pageant primroses when the surface of the soil feels dry. Keep them moderately moist, but not wet. Use plenty of humus in the soil to provide good drainage. Primroses prefer slightly acidic soil with plenty of compost. They don't do as well in sandy or clay soil.

Propagate pageant primroses by dividing the roots and replanting them in new areas. You can also propagate them by root cuttings, or by scattering seeds directly on the soil. The seeds need bright light to germinate, so don't bury them in soil. The same is true if you start seeds early in the year inside -- spread the seeds on the planting medium and keep them damp, in bright light.
