How to Change Furniture Legs

Do you have a piece of furniture that looks outdated? Maybe you have a great tabletop but dislike the legs, or an ottoman that isn't a comfortable height for resting your feet. Don't throw out an entire piece of furniture just because you don't love the legs. Table and other furniture legs can be replaced in just a few steps.

Things You'll Need

  • Piece of furniture
  • Wrench
  • Mounting plate, angled or straight

Instructions

Remove old legs by carefully turning your furniture onto its side and laying it down on an old blanket or drop cloth. Using a wrench, unscrew the nuts from the bolts and gently slide the leg out of its place. If you can't find a bolt, it is probably center mounted into the furniture. Turn the leg firmly in a clockwise direction to unscrew the leg from the furniture.

Find a replacement leg. Take the old leg with you while you shop. It is far easier to have the leg turner match the mounting mechanism of the current leg than for you to retrofit your table. If you shop online, make sure you are getting a similar mounting plate and the same size bolts as your current legs.

Paint or stain the new leg to match your furniture piece. It is much easier to do this step before the leg is attached to the furniture. Allow it to dry completely before installing.

Attach your new legs. Using the new mounting plate and the new hardware, screw the new legs on tight. Give them a good shake to make sure they aren't wobbly. Shims can be used to tighten the fit if needed.

Lift the furniture carefully back into place. Have someone help you with this step. You don't want to break one of your new legs before you get a chance to see how they look. Tighten bolts until the furniture is completely stable.
