How to Fix Swelling From Water Damage on a Coffee Tabe

A little bit of water damage on any wooden table is a hassle to clean. Getting out those white water marks can be difficult and take unconventional cleaning methods to get them looking like new. When a wood table is damaged by water to the point that the wood has buckled and is swelling, then you have a much larger problem on hand. When a lot of water sits on a wood table, the wood will eventually absorb the water giving it a swollen look. Coffee tables are expensive so instead of buying a new coffee table, try fixing the one you have. With some sandpaper and elbow grease, you can get your coffee table to like new again.

Things You'll Need

  • Protective eye wear
  • 220 grit sandpaper
  • 1/2 cup bleach
  • 1 gallon water
  • Bucket
  • Furniture oil

      Always wear goggles or protective glasses when sanding any kind of wood to prevent dust from getting into your eyes.

      Sand the swollen area with 220 grit sandpaper. When finished sanding the swollen area, the entire table top will need to be sanded as well. You will use several sanding disks to completely sand down the table.

      After sanding, your coffee table will be even. If it's not as even as you would like, mix bleach with water into a bucket. Scrub the entire coffee table with the solution, focusing on the stained and (once) swollen area.

      Allow the table to dry completely, then sand the surface once more.

      Apply furniture oil to the entire coffee table. Continue adding coats of oil until you are pleased with the depth of the color. The oil will even the color of the table.
