Instructions

    • 1

Choose a table that you can turn into a mosaic masterpiece. Old coffee tables and end tables are two surfaces to consider for your mosaic project.

    • 2

Wrap chosen ceramic or glass tiles loosely in a towel. Using a hammer, tap your tiles just hard enough to crack them into smaller pieces. Repeat this process until pieces are split into the desired size for the mosaic you have in mind. You will need small pieces to create a tabletop mosaic. Choose tiles that are the same thickness to keep your completed tabletop level.

    • 3

Place the tile pieces on the tabletop. This will help you to get an idea of where you want the pieces to go. Experiment with different designs, such as circles, stripes, alternating colors or random patterns. However, do not be concerned about getting this perfect. Enjoy the creativity of piecing the tiles together, as you will have to do it again when you use mortar to glue the tile pieces down.

    • 4

Mix the mortar per manufacturer instructions. Use a tile trowel to apply the mortar onto the tabletop. Score the mortar with the trowel, ensuring that 1/8 inch of mortar is on the tabletop.

    • 5

Set the tiles in the mortar. Leave approximately 1/8 inch space between each tile piece for grout. Once all the tiles are in place, allow them to dry for 24 to 48 hours.

    • 6

Fill in the gaps between tiles with premixed grout. Apply the grout with a rubber float and remove any excess with a damp sponge. Let the grout dry completely before placing anything on the tabletop.

    • 7

Apply a grout and tile sealer on your mosaic if the table will be placed outdoors.
