The legs of your table could be the most complicated part of your project. A simple approach is to purchase the base for the legs and then buy the legs that screw into the base. All you would need to do is mount the base flat against the bottom of the tabletop and then screw the legs into place. A pedestal table would require more planning as you would first need to determine how you want your single pedestal leg to look. Plan out the final look you want and then determine how you would accomplish that look. In some cases you may need to connect multiple leg pieces into one pedestal to get the look you want; in other instances you may be able to take a single post and add supports to it for the desired effect.
The surface of your table offers many different options. If you will be building a table that can be expanded with a leaf insert, then make sure to create a complete tabletop first and then cut out the middle for your leaf. Another option for expanding a tabletop is to have wings that can fold down during the day and then can be propped up for use in the evening. Become creative with your tabletop. Consider using decorative tile as the table surface or burning designs into the surface for a unique look.
One of the parts of a wooden table that can sometimes be taken for granted is the finish. The clear coat finish on your table not only helps to make your table last for a very long time, but it also protects your table from the abuse it will take on a daily basis. Be sure to put several coats of finish on the entire table after you have stained it but before you have screwed the hardware into place. To help preserve the finish, drill pilot holes into the table before screwing pieces into place.
