What Is a Parsons C Accent Table?

Parsons tables first came around in the 1930s, when a decorator lecturing at Parsons School of Design’s Paris branch asked his students to produce a standard table that would work with a variety of embellishments and in a variety of situations. The basic, boxy table was born. The basic design of Parsons table has since been adapted to create coffee tables, side tables, dining tables, consoles and Parsons C accent tables.
  1. Features

    • A Parsons C accent table has all the features of a standard Parsons table. These include a boxy, basic shape with legs that are the same thickness as the top of the table. The C accent tables have the added features of being in a C-shape, with the table top, side support and table bottom forming a letter C.

    Description

    • The table is made up of two squares held together by retangular side, forming a crude letter C. The square top and bottom of the table are the same size, while the rectangle is the same width as the squares but a bit h9igher. Parsons C accent tables usually measure about 18 inches wide, 18 inches deep and 25 inches high.

    Types

    • Wood has long been the standard material for traditional Parsons tables, but tubular steel is common for a Parsons C accent table. Tubular steel makes up the frame of the with a piece of glass or other material inserted in the top of the frame for the table top. Other table top options include granite, quartz, marble or wood. Black is the most common color for the frame.

    Uses

    • Parsons tables are basic enough to blend with any style decor. The C-shape of the accent table makes it useful for serving or working on a laptop computer or a variety of other tasks. The base of the C slides beneath a chair, placing the table top directly over the seated person’s lap. C-tables also make striking accent pieces with room to showcase artwork, a plant or other decorative item in the center of the base.

    Purchasing

    • Although they are plain, Parsons C accent tables can cost a few hundred dollars depending on materials used for the frame and top, such as wood or steel, veneers and finishing. These are generally available in a variety of choices from retailers, making the Parsons C table a versatile choice when decorating.
