How to Make Your Own Pub Table From 2 X 4'S

Pub tables are like small dining tables with a round top. These tables are often found in coffee shops, diners, and bars. The design of these tables is rarely complicated, however, the construction process requires detailed attention in order to end up with a solid table. Two-by-four-inch construction lumber will work well for a pub table, however, it will need to be stained, if it is kept outdoors, to prevent the wood from rotting.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay one 36-inch board flat and horizontal. Measure eight inches from the 18-inch center of the board to the left. Use your hand saw, chisel, and hammer to notch out a piece of wood from the top edge which measures 1.5 inches wide, and 1.75 inches deep. Repeat this process eight inches to the right of the center. You should have two notches that are along the same edge, and 16 inches apart. Repeat this process on three more 36-inch boards.

    • 2

Lay two 36-inch boards with the notches parallel, on edge, 16 inches apart, and with the notches facing up. Position the last two 36-inch boards with notches on top of the boards that are laying down, so they are perpendicular to them, and so the notches fit into each other. Screw the boards together where the notches fit together. This is the frame for your pub table. You should have a 16-by-16-inch area at the inside of this frame.

    • 3

Position a 32-inch board in each inside corner of the frame. These boards should be perpendicular to the frame, with the ends flush with one side of the frame. Screw these boards to the frame. These are the legs to your pub table, and they must be even to keep your table from wobbling.

    • 4

Turn your table upright, so it is standing on its legs. Screw the last 36-inch boards to the frame so they are parallel with one pair of boards that make up the frame, and perpendicular to the other pair of boards. Screw them into the boards that they are perpendicular with. The two outside boards should have their outside edge flush with the ends of the boards they are perpendicular with. These are the table top boards.

Insert a screw in the center of the middle board on the table top. It should be positioned 18 inches from both ends of this board, and 1.75 inches from both sides. Tie a string around this screw and tie the other end around a pencil. The length of string between the screw and the pencil should be 18 inches. Draw a 36-inch diameter circle on your table top boards, and remove the screw and string. Use your jig saw to cut along the line to make the table top round.
