How to Make Up Table Designs

With a troubled economy and the high cost of home furnishings, many people are turning to do-it-yourself projects for home improvement. Tables are relatively easy to design, as at their core, tables consist of two basic parts---legs and a surface. With a little perseverance and a little help, anyone can design a table, even if they have no construction experience.

  1. Designing Your Table

    • 1

Choose where your table will be used. Look up tables with this use on the Internet; note the average size of these tables. This will be your guideline. If you know where the table will go, size the area for maximum and minimum sizes.

    • 2

Choose one of the following two styles: modern or traditional. Type the style you chose, plus the word "table," into Google image search. Find tables that have similar features as the table you want to design.

    • 3

Draw a picture of the table you want on your graph paper, using your ruler and pencil. You may have to do this several times until you have designed the table you want. This is your rough draft.

    • 4

Redraw your table to scale, using your measurements from step one, the design from step two, your pencil and a scale ruler. Repeat this process until you create a design for the table you want. This is not your final draft; it is okay if the thickness of your legs or surface is off.

Go to a home improvement store with your draft. Ask an employee to guide you in your design by helping you choose the correct materials and for assistance with adding the proper nails and joints to the table. Have the employee look your design over with you.
