Lightly sand the surface of the wood with a piece of 400-grit sandpaper. Wipe away any dust created by the sanding with a soft cloth.
Pour a liberal amount of oil onto the surface of the wood.
Work the oil into the wood with a cheesecloth pad while wearing rubber gloves. Use a circular motion to spread the oil over the wooden surface. More oil may need to be applied to cover the entire surface.
Continue to firmly work the oil into the wood for approximately 15 minutes or until the surface of the piece cannot absorb any further oil. The heat generated by rubbing the wood will help the oil penetrate the wood more effectively.
Work the oil into the remaining surfaces of the wood piece, if applicable.
Wipe the entire piece with a clean cloth. This will remove any oil that may not have been absorbed into the wood.
Reapply two to three more coats of the oil after the first has dried. Depending upon the type of oil used, the drying time could take anywhere from 12 to 24 hours.
