How to Sand Table Legs

After years of wear and tear, most wooden furniture could use a touch up to help restore its former beauty. This process of restoration is usually accomplished by sanding. The problem with sanding table legs is that they can be difficult because of their grooves and odd shapes. Fortunately, it is possible for most people to sand table legs when following a few steps.

Things You'll Need

  • Chemical stripper
  • Paintbrush
  • Mineral spirits or water
  • 120-grit sandpaper
  • Brass toothbrush
  • 220-grit sandpaper

Instructions

    • 1

      Apply a coat of chemical stripper to the table legs using a paintbrush. Chemical strippers are available at most home improvement stores and can vary in their application process. Be sure to follow the directions on the package for exact instructions.

      Allow the chemical stripper to set on the table legs for the specified amount of time on the instructions. This time is usually around 20 minutes.

      Remove the chemical stripper using either mineral spirits or water. The directions will tell you which to use. Then allow the table legs to dry for 24 hours.

      Sand away the leftover residue from the chemical stripper using 120-grit sandpaper. Use a brass toothbrush for the grooves and hard to reach areas.

      Sand the table legs again using 220-grit sandpaper to smooth them out. Use light strokes and apply only a minimal amount of pressure.
