How to Make a Polyester Resin Topped Table

Crafters use polyester resin to create one-of-a-kind items, such as furniture or decorations. Polyester resin is made by mixing two liquids; together these chemical components form the resin, which hardens clear. You can use the plastic resin to give your tabletops a strong and long-lasting finish. This type of finish works well if you like a very shiny table or your table needs more protection than a traditional polyurethane finish provides.

Things You'll Need

  • Table
  • Glass cleaner

Instructions

    • 1

Clean your table thoroughly using glass cleaner and rags. Wipe carefully to remove all traces of lint to prevent imperfections. Allow the table to dry completely before applying the resin.

    • 2

Read all the directions that come with the polyester resin kit; not all manufacturer's directions are the same.

    • 3

Mix the two parts of the epoxy -- the resin and the hardener -- according to the package directions. Let it sit according the package specifications to allow the hardener time to combine with the resin to make the epoxy.

    • 4

Tape up the edges of your table while waiting for the polyester resin solution to set. Stick the painter's tape around the entire edge of the table, but do not fold it over the edge. Allow the tape to stand up along the edge as a barrier to prevent the resin from dripping onto the floor, especially if you are working inside.

    • 5

Use a natural bristle paintbrush, since the bristles are softer and leave fewer brush marks, to apply the polyester resin to the top of your table in a thin layer. Allow the resin to dry for 24 hours.

    • 6

Sand the dry polyester resin very lightly with 220-grit sandpaper to help another coat adhere. Use a damp rag to wipe up any sawdust.

    • 7

Add an additional coat of polyester resin to your table top. Allow this to dry for another 24 hours.

    • 8

Add more coats of the resin if desired, sanding in between each layer.

    • 9

Allow the table top to cure for 48 hours before using. Wait a little longer before placing hot items on the table.
