How to Make a Full-Size Picnic Table Out of 2 Sheets of Plywood

Picnic tables allow friends and family to sit down outdoors and enjoy a meal together. Picnic tables are traditionally constructed using 2-by-4s or 2-by-10s, but plywood also makes a reliable building material. With two sheets of 1-inch-thick plywood, you can construct a full-size picnic table at a fraction of the cost of using traditional lumber.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 sheets 1-inch-thick plywood, 4 feet by 8 feet
  • Table saw
  • Tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Wood glue
  • Box of 1-inch screws
  • Box of 1 1/2-inch screws
  • Box of 3-inch screws
  • Drill
  • Phillips-head drill bit
  • 12 metal L-brackets

Instructions

    • 1

Cut one sheet of plywood in half lengthwise with the table saw to create two 2-by-8-foot strips.

    • 2

Cut both 2-by-8-foot strips in half lengthwise to create four 1-by-8-foot strips. These sections of plywood will be used as seating for the picnic table as well as the table top itself.

    • 3

Cut one 1-by-8-foot strip out of the remaining 4-by-8 sheet of plywood.

    • 4

Cut three 6-inch-by-3-foot sections of plywood from the remaining 3-by-8-foot section of plywood.

    • 5

Lay three 1-by-8-foot strips of plywood on a flat surface side by side to create a surface that is 3 feet wide by 8 feet long. Measure in 6 inches from each end, and mark the exact center of the strips.

    • 6

Apply a line of wood glue at all three locations and press one 6-inch-by-3-foot section of plywood on each location.

    • 7

Drive 1 1/2-inch screws through the 6-inch-by-3-foot plywood strips to join all six wood sections together. Drive two nails through the 6-inch-by-3-foot plywood at each 1-foot-by-8-foot plywood section crossing.

    • 8

Measure and mark 3 inches towards the center from each end of the 6-inch-by-3-foot sections of plywood used to join the table top together.

    • 9

Cut eight sections of plywood that measure 6 inches wide by 3 feet long. These sections will be the legs for the table.

    • 10

Attach one leg section at each 3-inch mark along the 6-inch-by-3-foot joining plywood sections. Attach these legs on the outer edges along the outside 6-inch-by-3-foot sections and on both sides of the center section by driving 2-inch screws directly through the sides of the legs into the 6-inch-by-3-foot strips. This will create a system of eight legs to support the table top.

    • 11

Cut six sections of plywood that measure 10 inches wide by 15 inches long. These will be the legs for the benches.

    • 12

Attach one metal L-bracket to the front and back sides of the leg sections along the 10-inch edge with 1-inch screws. This will create six T-structures.

    • 13

Measure in 6 inches from each end of the two remaining 1-foot-by-8-foot plywood strips and measure the direct center of the length. Attach one T-structure at each location by driving 1-inch screws through the metal L-brackets into the plywood. Each bench will have three legs that will create a supporting leg system for the benches.
