How to Choose a Cocktail Table

A cocktail table is also known as a coffee table or an occasional table, and is used in a living room. The table is usually placed in front of a sofa. Whether you need a place to set down a cocktail, a cup of coffee, your magazine collection or your feet, choosing a cocktail table says a lot about your personality as it completes the look of a room.

Look for inspiration by perusing magazines, the Internet and visiting furniture showrooms. Home magazines or catalogs provide endless furniture ideas as well as design and placement tricks to emphasize or de-emphasize certain pieces -- all from the comfort of home.

Survey what you already have in the room. Use a measuring tape to determine the available space. Dimensions are important because a table that's too large won't allow you or guests to easily move around, and a table that's too small will look awkward and may not be functional.

Consider your style. Do you trend toward traditional, contemporary, Asian or eclectic design? If you love clean, contemporary lines, chances are you won't be satisfied with an ornately carved cocktail table, no matter how great a deal it is. If you love furniture from the Arts and Crafts movement, a mirror and chrome table probably won't suit your taste.

Think about your lifestyle. If you have a busy household with kids, their friends and pets, it may not be wise to invest in a pricey antique table. If you live in a small space, consider purchasing a table that has hidden storage, or perhaps purchasing a large ottoman that can double as additional seating. A large tray placed on an ottoman will provide a stable surface for drinks.

Determine your budget. Do not waste too much time in pricey stores, except to get design ideas. If you are on a limited budget, look for furniture at second-hand stores and find something that has the lines and design you want, and then paint or stain it. You can always stretch your budget by refinishing or restoring a piece for less money than buying something new.
