How to Protect Tables

Tables serve a number of different functions. They can be purely decorative or they can be the setting for a family dinnertime. Tables that are used regularly are subjected to a lot of wear and tear due to friction from objects being dragged across them and spills of food and beverages. Tables need to be maintained to keep them looking their best. Fortunately, protecting a table from damage just requires some good regular habits.

Instructions

    • 1

Move the table away from any nearby heat sources such as radiators or ovens to help eliminate the chance of fire. This also reduces the risk of the table getting damaged by excessive heat.

    • 2

Keep pets away from the table to prevent chewing and clawing, which can badly damage the table's legs and feet.

    • 3

Cover the table in a table pad or a tablecloth to help prevent stains. Pads provide protection against scratching and impact damage while tablecloths can easily be washed in the washing machine when they get stained. Table stains and scratches are much more difficult to remove from table wood.

    • 4

Use coasters whenever beverages are on the table to prevent condensation from seeping into the table surface and damaging it.

    • 5

Prevent people from putting their feet on the table or from sitting on it. This helps to prevent scratching as well as the risk of the table tipping from uneven weight distribution.

    • 6

Pick items up off of the table instead of dragging them to prevent scratching.

    • 7

Maintain a room humidity of around 35 percent. If the humidity rises, moisture can seep into the table and cause mold growth and discoloration. A humidifier is useful in this regard.

Close the curtains if the table is in direct sunlight to help prevent the color from fading.
