Instructions

  1. Build The Frame

    • 1

Cut a piece of plywood to a 36 by 36-inch square for the table top.

    • 2

Cut four pieces of 4-by-4 lumber for legs. Pub tables sit higher than regular tables, so determine how high you want your table to be before you cut the legs (usually between 36 inches and 42 inches). Cut two pieces of 2-by-4 lumber to 36-inch lengths, and three pieces that are 33 inches long.

    • 3

Sand all the pieces and apply stain to the legs before assembling.

    • 4

Place the two 36-inch pieces parallel to each other. Position two of the 33-inch pieces between them to form a square. Fasten all four pieces together with 2-½-inch wood screws. Add a center beam using the remaining 33-inch piece of lumber and screw it to the 36-inch pieces, inside the square.

    • 5

Place the plywood top over the frame, making certain centered over the frame. Drive 1-½ inch screws through the plywood into the frame along the outside edge and down the center. Use a screw every 8 inches or so.

    • 6

Turn the table top over. Attach one leg in each inside corner of the square, using 2-½ inch screws. Use two screws on each side, and screw them from the frame side into the leg.

    • 7

Stand the table up and drive a screw through each corner of the table into the top of the legs.

    Add a leather top

    • 8

Cut a piece of leather to fit over the top and to wrap around to the underside of the table top (approximately 44 inches square). Dry fit the table to the leather by placing the leather face down, then set the table upside down on top. Make certain the leather is long enough and that you have positioned the leather so the best of the grain will cover the top of the table.

    • 9

Remove the table and spray the back of the leather and the top of the table with adhesive.

    • 10

Position the table upside down on the leather. Pull the leather around to the underside of the table and staple or tack into place. Create neat folds at the corners. Allow adhesive to dry.

    • 11

Place a piece of masking tape on each edge of the table where you want tacks or rivets to be placed. Using a tape measure, mark the spacing for each tack, since you do not want to create unnecessary holes in the leather. Space the tacks by 1-½ to 2 inches. Affix tacks or rivets with the tack hammer. Remove the masking tape.
