How to Extend a Solid Oak Table

Solid oak is prized for its durability and toughness. Oak veneer products pale in comparison. In addition, it has a timeless appeal, equally suited to modern and traditional room decor. Its pale golden-beige color can add freshness and vitality to the space, while its solidity imparts a sense of permanence. Solid oak extender tables add convenience to style, whether you need to expand a dining, buffet or other table type for additional guests or family members. Extender leaves may be detached, foldout or butterfly, or pullout.

Instructions

  1. Detached Leaves

    • 1

Unlatch the latching mechanism at either side of the table. Your table may have a pair or series of clips, clasps or latches. Typically, they will be located on the underside of the table top. Some extender tables have no latching apparatus.

    • 2

Pull the two halves of the table apart. You should see a set of interior peg holes at regular intervals in one half of the table top and a series of pegs in the other half.

    • 3

Get out the extender leaf or leaves. In some cases, the extender leaves are stored beneath the table. In other cases, you are required to store the leaves separately. The leaf should also have peg holes on one side and pegs on the other.

    • 4

Place the leaf into the center gap, aligning the peg holes of the leaf with the pegs of the table top on one side, and the pegs of the leaf with the table top peg holes on the other.

    • 5

Insert the pegs of the leaf into the table top holes on one side.

    • 6

Insert the pegs of the table top into the leaf peg holes on the other side.

    • 7

Pull or push the ends of the table toward the center until you have closed the spaces between leaf and table top.

    • 8

Latch the leaf into place, if your table has a latching mechanism.

    Foldout, or Butterfly, Leaves

    • 9

Release the latching mechanism on the underside of the table top.

    • 10

Pull the two halves of the table top apart to reveal the foldout leaves.

    • 11

Pull up on the foldout leaf as you unfold it. It will settle itself between the table top halves.

    • 12

Pull or push the table top toward the center until no gap remains.

    • 13

Lock the pullout leaf into place, if your table has locking apparatus.

    Pullout Leaves

    • 14

Pull up slightly on the leaf. The leaf should be conveniently located at the end of the table just beneath the table top.

    • 15

      Pull outward on the leaf.

    • 16

Listen for the click that indicates the pullout leaf has locked into position.
