How to Extend an Oak Table

Oak trees, close relatives of beech trees, can grow to be 200 years old, sturdily surviving wind, rain and other acts of nature. Is it any wonder, then, that the wood harvested from oak trees is synonymous with strength and durability? Relative to decor, the blonde-beige color of natural oak offers notes of tradition and modernity at once and blends well with nearly any color scheme. Extending your trusty oak table -- whether for dining, busines, or outdoor use -- is easy.

Instructions

    • 1

Fetch your extender leaf. Ideally, it should be stored in a cool, dry area rather than in a damp basement.

    • 2

Take a close look at the sides of the leaf. You should find pegs extruding from one side and holes for pegs on the other.

    • 3

Draw one end of the table toward you until the table top opens at the middle. Depending on how your oak table is fabricated, you might need to pry the table apart by pulling on both ends. In that case, you will need help from another person.

    • 4

Lay the leaf into the center interval so its pegs face the peg holes in the table.

    • 5

Thrust the leaf pegs into the peg holes of the table and vice versa.

    • 6

Squeeze the table halves toward the leaf to firmly shut the table.
