How to Remove Paint From a Stained Table

When painting a room or doing crafts with paint, it is best to remove or cover furniture such as end tables or dining tables to avoid getting paint on them and damaging their appearance. However, accidents happen. You can cover up the problem by putting a cloth or doily on the table. But it also is possible to remove the paint from the table. Instructions

  1. Fresh Paint

    • 1

Dab up the paint spot with a clean cotton cloth. Remove as much of the paint as possible with the cloth. Do not rub.

    • 2

Apply a small amount of mineral spirits to a clean cotton rag. The rag should be wet but not dripping with the solution.

    • 3

Dab the paint spot with the mineral spirit rag. Do not rub. Gently blot until all the paint is gone. Allow to dry.

    Dry Paint

    • 4

Add one to two drops of boiled linseed oil to the paint spot. Be sure the entire spot is covered by the linseed oil.

    • 5

Allow the paint to bubble and loosen under the boiled linseed oil.

    • 6

Scrape off the paint using a putty knife. Place the knife parallel to the table and push up the paint, avoiding the finish of the table.

    • 7

Repeat the process until you have removed all the paint. Blot the area with a clean rag, and wax the area to return the shine.
