How to Repair a Wood Table That Has White Spots from Water Spills

An expensive, hand-rubbed finish on a wood table that takes a craftsman days to apply can be ruined in moments if you place a cold, wet glass on it. In the days before polyurethane and other resin finishes, varnish or shellac were commonly used to achieve a gloss finish on fine furniture. The finish on these pieces was attractive, but was easily damaged by exposure to water. You'll achieve the best repair results by catching the water damage early.

Instructions

  1. Fresh Water Spots

    • 1

Dry the area thoroughly with paper towels.

    • 2

Dry the damaged area with a hair dryer set on low. Keep the dryer in motion. The goal is to dry the finish, not to cook the underlying wood. Applying too much heat can cause the finish to crack and check.

    • 3

Apply furniture polish to the finish as soon as the water spot disappears.

    Old Water Spots

    • 4

Squeeze a small amount of toothpaste on a cotton cloth. Use white toothpaste only; gel or liquid tooth cleaning products will not work.

    • 5

Rub gently until the spot disappears.

    • 6

Wipe the surface clean with a soft cloth.

    Large Water Spots

    • 7

Pour enough lemon oil on the surface to completely cover the stain.

    • 8

Rub the stain with very fine, 0000-grade or finer, steel wool until the stain is no longer visible.

    • 9

Buff the area with a soft cloth.
