Coffee Table Options

A coffee table adds function and decoration to the seating area of your family or living room. Traditional coffee tables come in a variety of styles, but alternative coffee table solutions expand the options for table space in common areas. You may even have a piece of furniture already in your home that would work as a coffee table.
  1. Traditional Coffee Table

    • Traditional coffee tables come in a variety of styles, sizes and materials, allowing you to find one that will fit with your current furniture. Wood and metal are common materials for the tables. Some have a glass top or sections of glass framed by wood or metal. A rectangle or square is common, but you will also find round or oval coffee tables. Some have storage built in beneath the table providing a functional centerpiece for the room.

    Table Collection

    • For more flexibility, consider a collection of smaller tables. A set of four tables is ideal, but you may need to adjust the number based on the size and preferred layout. Ideas include lining tables in a row or creating a square with two rows of two tables. The individual tables allow you to play with the arrangement for an easy update on the room. When you entertain, break up the tables and move them around the room as needed to accommodate your guests and their drinks.

    Ottomans

    • An ottoman with a flat, sturdy top can double as a coffee table. Some ottomans are designed specifically for this purpose. Guests can prop their feet up on the table or use it to hold items. Trays placed on top of the ottomans provide more stability for glasses. If necessary, the ottomans also work as additional seating. Choose a style that opens up for storage inside to make this table option more functional. If you prefer more stability, place a traditional, glass-topped coffee table over the ottoman. The color and style of the furniture still shows through and you have access for seating. Storing ottomans under the coffee table keeps them out of the way when not in use.

    Trunk

    • A trunk with a flat top is another alternative for a coffee table. Trunks often have an antique look to add a rustic feel to the room. The piece comes with built-in storage under the lid. Use coasters every time you place glasses on the trunk surface to avoid damage to the wood. Look at garage sales or thrift stores for inexpensive trunks that you can refinish.
