How to Fix a Water Ring on Oak

Water rings leave a gray film on wood surfaces, such as an oak dining room, coffee or end table. Getting rid of the water ring is achievable if you use the correct household products. Oak wood is naturally hard, durable and heavy. The wood color is a pale yellow, blond or honey color and the furniture will lasts for decades in your home if given the proper care.

Things You'll Need

  • Cheesecloth or an old, white cotton t-shirt
  • Non-sudsing household ammonia
  • Cotton pad
  • Denatured alcohol
  • Raw linseed oil

Instructions

  1. Ammonia Method

    • 1

      Place two or three drops of regular household ammonia on a small piece of cheesecloth or an old, white t-shirt.

      Dampen the cloth with hot water. Wring it out well.

      Wipe the water ring on your oak wood gently with the cloth. The water ring disappears after rubbing the area for one or two minutes.

    Denatured Alcohol Method

      Dampen a cotton pad with a few drops of denatured alcohol.

      Sprinkle three or four drops of raw linseed oil onto the cotton pad as well.

      Rub the cotton pad lightly over the water ring on the oak wood. Move the pad in the direction of the wood grain. It only takes a couple of minutes before the water ring disappears.
