Traditional Coffee Tables

The traditional coffee table did not become popular until the 20th century. A convenient place was needed to set coffee cups while relaxing on a sofa. The low, wide table that was positioned in front of a sofa, a coffee table, fulfilled that need. Crafted of wood, metal, iron, glass, marble or slate, traditional coffee tables accommodate an array of traditional design styles. Drawers, shelves and other useful features are often incorporated into the coffee table design.
  1. Origin

    • The first wooden tables specifically designated as coffee tables were crafted during the latter portion of the Victorian era in Britain. A table was designed by E. W. Godwin in 1868 that is considered to be one of the first examples of a European-crafted coffee table. Popularity of the coffee table emerged in the 1900s, and they have evolved into a standard piece of living room furniture.

    Uses

    • Usefulness of a coffee table is not restricted to providing a convenient place to set your coffee cup. Covered with a leather or fabric padded top, a coffee table can be used as an ottoman to elevate your legs and feet while relaxing on a sofa. Functioning as a family game table, a homework desk or a snack table for entertaining guests, displays the versatility of the traditional coffee table.

    Features

    • A shelf incorporated into the design of a traditional coffee table provides a convenient space for storing books, newspapers and magazines. Pull-out drawers conceal note pads, pens, craft and hobby supplies, electronic remote devices and other assorted items. A trunk coffee table accommodates throws, pillows and blankets or children's toys, games and books.

    Accessorizing

    • A vase of fresh-cut flowers placed on your coffee table adds instant life and energy to a room. An arrangement of flickering candles creates a cozy ambiance. Placing a decorative tray with sparkling glasses evokes a welcoming aura. A crystal clear vase filled with beloved Christmas ornaments is an inexpensive way to display favorite items. Change the contents of the vase seasonally with colorful Easter eggs in the spring and small pumpkins and colorful gourds in the fall.
