Sand the tabletop and legs to smooth and remove any rough spots. Brush the dust off of the wood.
Paint or stain the tabletop and the legs. Apply one coat using a brush or rag, and let dry for four hours; then apply another. Let dry overnight.
Turn the tabletop so that the top is on the floor. Find the center of the table top using the measuring tape and make a mark at it. Measure 6 inches away from the center on the left and right and make two marks. Measure 6 inches away from the center up and down and make two marks. Draw a square, connecting the four marks.
Position the four leg plates on the bottom of the table top, one in each corner of the square. The leg plates should be evenly spaced apart and square, so that the table will be steady. Measure the space between the plates to make sure they are equally spaced. The outside edge of each plate will be 6 inches from the center.
Mark the wood where the holes in the leg plates are. Only mark the holes for the screws to attach the plates, not the hole for the table leg. Take the leg plates off of the tabletop.
Attach a 1/8-inch drill bit to your drill and drill 1/2-inch-deep pilot holes at each pencil mark.
Set the leg plates back on the tabletop, over the drilled pilot holes. Drill the screws into each hole to attach the plates to the table.
Twist the bolt on the top of each table leg into the hole on the leg plates.
Turn the coffee table right side up.
