How to Make a Table Less Slippery

Setting a table on a newly waxed floor causes the table to slide from side-to-side or end-to end when a guest leans on the table and causes the table to move out of position. Many times new table surfaces have a high-gloss finish that makes any smooth-bottom item glide effortlessly across the table. Stopping a table from moving about the room or preventing glasses and dinnerware from drifting to an unwanted position on the table is necessary to keep your table and dinnerware exactly where you want it to lay.

Instructions

    • 1

Move the table to the side of the room or out of the room to access the floor space under the table. Place an area rug with a nonskid backing large enough to accommodate the size of the table in position on the floor. Set the table on top of the area rug to end the sliding.

Lay a blanket or large rags on the floor. Tip the table onto its side to reach the bottom of the table legs or pedestal. Clean the bottoms of the table legs or pedestal with a damp rag to remove dust and dirt. Dry the bottom of the legs with a rag. Peel off self-adhesive, skid-resistant felt pads and place the sticky side on the bottom of the table legs to end sliding. Lift the table and put it in position.

Lift an end of the table off the floor high enough for a helper to insert rubber furniture cups under each lifted leg. Set the table down. Move to the opposite end of the table. Lift the legs off the floor and have a helper place the rubber cups under the legs.

Pick up the table with the aid of a helper. Have another helper place a large sheet of paper under the pedestal. Rest the table on top of the paper. Trace around the pedestal onto the paper. Lift the table and have a helper remove the paper. Cut out the tracing to create a template. Place a rubber-backed cabinet liner or thin bath mat under the template and trace a line around the template. Cut out the bath mat or cabinet liner with scissors. Tip the table to its side and lay it on a large blanket. Place double-sided tape on the bottom of the pedestal and put the bath mat or cabinet liner on top, aligning it to the edges of the pedestal. Turn the table right side up.

Lay a nonslip tablecloth over a table with a slippery surface to prevent items from moving about the table. Tablecloth material creates a barrier between the table's slippery surface and items on the table.
