How to Paint a Sofa Table

Painting a sofa table doesn't necessarily have to involve hours of prep work or complicated painting techniques. Avoid the possibility of visual brush strokes or expensive paints and stains by using spray paint to refinish your table. Spray paint comes in nearly every color imaginable and doesn't require pricey brushes or messy paint trays to apply. It is also budget friendly, so if you tire of the color after a few months, respraying your sofa table is a very cost-effective option.

Wood filler, paintable
Putty knife
Sandpaper, (fine-grade and medium-grade)
Cloth, clean and damp
Primer, spray on
Spray paint

Instructions

  Fill in holes, chipped veneer and any other imperfections in the table with wood filler. Allow the filler to dry completely, according to the manufacturer's instructions. Sand until smooth using fine-grade sandpaper

  Sand the entire table using medium-grade sandpaper. Since you will be repainting and using primer, only a light sanding is required. Sand just enough to roughen the finish so it will accept the paint.

  Wipe down the table with a damp cloth to remove all traces of dust.

  Spray on a coat of primer. Use long strokes, going back and forth evenly to avoid drips. Allow the primer to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions -- typically 24 hours.

  Spray on at least two coats of interior spray paint in the same manner as the primer. Allow the first coat to dry completely before applying the second coat.

  Allow the table to dry for 48 to 72 hours before use. Make sure the paint is completely dry before setting anything on the surface.
