How to Make Homemade Speaker Stands From Wood

Adding speaker stands can be a stylish way of speaker placement, but they can also be used for isolating speaker vibrations. When speakers are mounted on stands that have significant mass, this helps dampen vibrations. Sand is a relatively cheap method of creating mass. Additional protection from vibration can be obtained by the use of vibration isolation legs. Making a speaker stand from wood requires some basic tools and skills in woodworking, but it should only take a few hours to finish.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark off 18 inches on the 1-by-4-inch fir board with the T-square and cut off the piece with the circular saw. Cut three more pieces of the same length. Mark off 17 1/4 inches on the board and cut off this piece. Cut three more pieces of this length.

      Accurate measurement is important.

Draw a line 3/8 inch from the end of each of the 18-inch-long, 1-by-4-inch boards and mark two points 1 inch from each end for drilling screw pilot holes. Drill the pilot holes and then use the countersink bit to provide an inset space for the screws. Then screw the 18-inch board to the ends of one of the 17 1/4-inch boards. Attach the other 17 1/4-inch board to the other end and finish making the box frame by screwing on the 18-inch board on the other side.

Draw a line 3/8 inch from the edge on all sides of each plywood piece. Along this line, drill two holes on each side of the plywood pieces for mounting on the 18-by-18-inch frame. Countersink the holes and then mount the bottom piece on the frame with the 1-inch screws. Drill three holes in the mounted piece of plywood for the leveling feet, with one hole forward and two holes towards the back. Then mount the anti-vibration leveling legs with the wrench. Check and adjust the level of the table frame as needed with the wrench.

Cover the three exposed nuts with duct tape. Place a plastic bag inside the frame and fill with sand to within a 1/4 inch of the top of the frame. Fold over the plastic bag top and seal it with duct tape. Then place the other 18-by-18-inch piece of plywood on top of the frame and screw it in place.

Fill all of the screw holes and gaps between the plywood and frame with wood filler and allow the filler to dry. Use 100-grit sandpaper to make all surfaces smooth and then finish-sand with the 150-grit sandpaper. Then paint the table the color of your choice.
