How to Apply Shellac to a Maple Table

Shellac is a natural resin made from the secretions of the lac bug, which is native to India. This resin was favored by many woodworkers up until the middle of the 20th century because of the glossy finish it left when used as a wood sealer. Although not as common as modern synthetic wood finishes, such as polyurethane, shellac is still used today. if you're using shellac to finish wood furniture, such as a maple table, you must use a process that is slightly different from using other finishes.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour some of the shellac into a separate container and dilute it with an equal amount of rubbing alcohol. Stir the shellac thoroughly.

    • 2

Apply the shellac to the table with a paintbrush in smooth, even strokes. Alternatively, you can use a clean, lint-free cloth to apply the shellac. If you choose this method, pour a small amount of the diluted shellac onto the cloth and wipe it into the surface of the wood. Always brush or wipe with the grain of the wood.

    • 3

Allow the first coat of shellac to dry completely. This can take up to 10 hours but refer to the product label for specific information from the manufacturer.

    • 4

Sand the shellacked wood lightly with a 240-grit or higher piece of sandpaper. Wipe up the dust with a tack cloth. Apply another coat of the diluted shellac and allow it to dry completely.

    • 5

Apply a final coat of full-strength shellac, using the same application method as you used earlier. Allow this coat to dry completely before using the table.
