Stir the polyurethane gently with a paint stirrer. When transporting the can, try not to agitate its contents. Do not shake the can to mix the polyurethane. This can cause bubbles to form in the liquid, which can be transferred to your finish.
Pour a small amount of the polyurethane directly onto the table. Spread the polyurethane over the surface of the wood with a foam or lamb's wool applicator. Allow the polyurethane to dry completely.
Buff the surface of the dried polyurethane with a piece of 400-grit sandpaper. This will help the next coat adhere to the surface of the previous coat. Wipe away the dust with a damp cloth.
Apply a second coat of polyurethane to the table using the same process you used earlier. Allow the polyurethane to dry. Apply as many as five coats of polyurethane, allowing each coat to dry before applying the subsequent one.
