Measure the table to determine the length and width of the table surface. Add 1 inch to each measurement to accommodate seam allowances and write down the numbers.
Measure the table height from the floor to the top surface and add 1 inch to the measurement. Write down the adjusted number.
Measure the circumference of the table surface, measuring around the edge. Multiply the number by two so there is enough fabric for the ruffle skirt and seams.
Cut out a square or rectangle piece of fabric using the length and width measurements for the top surface. Use painters tape to secure the fabric to the top of the table if the table corners are rounded. Trim the excess fabric from the corners, leaving a 1-inch overhang for seam allowance.
Cut out the ruffle skirt using the measurements for the table height and circumference. Sew multiple pieces of fabric together, if needed, to get the correct size for the skirt. Sew the two short ends together with the right sides together, using a one-half inch seam to make a loop.
Increase the stitch length to the longest available on your sewing machine, usually a 5 setting. Sew a straight stitch about three-quarter inch from the top edge and a second row one-quarter inch from the top edge with the long stitch length to gather the skirt.
Pull one set of the gathering threads gently to gather the top edge of the skirt. Pull and push the fabric along the stitching slowly to prevent breaking the threads as you gather the skirt.
Pin the top of the cover to the gathered edge of the skirt with the right sides together. Adjust the gathering to add more or less gathers to make the skirt fit around the top piece of fabric. Sew the two pieces together with a one-half inch seam.
Place the cover over the table to check the hem length. Turn one-quarter inch of fabric on the bottom edge toward the backside of the fabric and pin to hold in place. Turn the fabric under a second one-quarter inch, or the amount required so the skirt bottom lies floor level. Pin the hem to hold it in place as you turn the fabric under. Sew the hem with a straight-stitch on the sewing machine to hold in place.
