How to Fix a Nicked Table

The smooth expanse of a finely-made table is a beautiful thing -- until someone puts a nick in it. That small ding pulls the eye, taking away from the otherwise good looks of your prized furniture piece. You can't take away the nick, as it's a damaged piece in the wood itself, but you can cover it up. Fix your nicked table with camouflage and you can stop awkwardly placing the candy dish to hide the flaw.

Instructions

    • 1

Cover the nick with a shoe polish that matches the shade of the wood. For darker woods use dark brown; try cordovan for cherry or other reddish woods and use tan for blond wood. Use the polish sparingly, covering only the raw wood that's exposed in the nick.

    • 2

Use a walnut or Brazil nut on darker woods if you don't have any shoe polish. Rub the meat of the nut onto the raw wood. The nut oil will darken the wood, bringing back the color to match the rest of the table.

Touch up the nick with crayons or markers that match the color of the wood stain, if you don't have shoe polish or nuts in the house. Pick the color closest to the wood finish and use a little at a time until the nick is hidden.

Cover the entire table with a fresh coat of furniture polish and wipe it dry with a soft cloth.
