Different Types of Picnic Tables to Build

Having a picnic table for your home gives you and your family a place to enjoy meals outdoors. It can also provide an outdoor space for projects and additional seating on a patio or deck. Building your own picnic table is an option if you have basic construction skills. However, first you'll need to select or create a plan based on one of the major types of picnic tables.
  1. One-Piece Tables

    • The most common type of picnic table that you can build yourself is a one-piece wooden table. This type of picnic table has an A-shaped frame that supports both the table surface and two long benches. It uses pressure-treated lumber, nails and bolts to stand up to the elements. A one-piece table is the simplest design with its built-in seating and limited list of materials. You can also customize the table's length to accommodate four, six, eight or more people.

    Three-Piece Tables

    • Another do-it-yourself picnic table option is a three-piece table that consists of a table and two separate benches. The design may be similar to a one-piece table without its benches, or entirely different since there's no need for a frame that includes places for seating to mount to it. Separate benches make the table easier for one person to move since each section is lighter than a one-piece table. They also allow picnic table users to adjust the distance between the bench and the table for more comfortable seating.

    Kids' Tables

    • Most standard picnic table plans are built for average-sized adults. While these tables may still accommodate children, a kids' picnic table uses less material and is customized for the lower height and shorter reaching distance of children. A kids' picnic table is basically a smaller version of a full-sized table, and can use a one- or three-piece format. Kids' picnic tables may also feature round sanded edges to reduce the risk of scrapes and splinters.

    Metal Picnic Tables

    • Commercially available picnic tables come in a wide range of materials, including plastic and metal. While forming a metal table may be too difficult for an amateur carpenter, a wooden table with a metal frame is still an option. Thin metal tubing and prefabricated joints can replace the wooden frame of a one- or three-piece picnic table. Treated metal frames are more durable than wood, allowing you to replace the benches and tabletop boards as they deteriorate while keeping the same metal frame.
